Governance
What NIST adds to the AI conversation
Trustworthy AI requires attention to the surrounding system.
Use a broader frame
The NIST AI Risk Management Framework organizes its core around Govern, Map, Measure, and Manage. Its companion playbook offers suggested actions for organizations using the framework. These resources are voluntary guidance, not a certification attached to an individual product.
The useful shift is to consider AI as part of an operating arrangement with people, context, and consequences. A model's capability is one part of that arrangement. The surrounding decisions determine how it will actually be used.
Ask operational questions
For a business using OnPoint, the practical questions include what information an assistant can access, how a person reviews a finding, and what separates a proposed action from an executed one. These are ordinary workflow questions with governance consequences.
An illustrative QA review makes the connection tangible. The system should identify the requirement, preserve the evidence, expose uncertainty, and keep the human decision understandable. A useful review asks whether these relationships remain clear, not just whether the generated explanation reads well.
Make the guidance your own
A framework cannot substitute for examining the specific use case. Different actions have different consequences, and different sources carry different limitations. The organization must decide how to assess those conditions and what controls are appropriate.
Our editorial view is that AI governance should develop alongside AI capability. Clear access, traceable proposals, and reviewable evidence are practical design priorities. They are a starting point for disciplined use, not a claim that OnPoint has been certified by NIST or that a framework eliminates risk.
