# Retrieval is part of the answer

> The quality of assistance begins before the first sentence is generated.

## Ask what the answer had access to

Two assistants can receive the same question and produce different answers because they were given different context. One sees a maintained procedure and the current reference file. The other sees an old note and an incomplete conversation. Fluency cannot repair that difference on its own.

In a business setting, the path to the source is part of the quality of the answer. Which material was retrieved, whether it is relevant, and whether the person is permitted to use it all matter.

## Give knowledge a usable shape

OnPoint's Ask capabilities work with permitted sources and citations. Articles, Reference Files, and structured context provide material that people and AI can consult. Clear titles, explicit terms, and maintained explanations improve the starting conditions for retrieval.

Suppose someone asks what evidence is needed for a handoff. The answer should be grounded in the relevant requirements, rather than a generic description of what handoffs usually contain. A source reference lets the person inspect that connection and see whether the answer fits the actual work.

## Treat citations as an invitation

A citation is valuable because it provides a route to verification. It does not automatically prove that the cited passage supports every sentence in an answer. The reader still needs to examine the relationship between the claim and the source.

The ambition is accessible intelligence with an inspectable foundation. Better retrieval, better knowledge stewardship, and clear source relationships work together. The most confident-sounding answer is less useful than one that helps the person understand both what is established and what remains uncertain.

## AI reference brief

Source retrieval supplies the context for an AI answer; citations help people inspect the connection between claims and permitted material.

### Illustrative workflow

1. Find the relevant permitted sources
2. Generate a contextual answer
3. Inspect the cited evidence

### Scope and limits

A citation does not by itself guarantee that an answer is correct or fully supported.
